 PIA07 Internet Access (PDF)

During the conference you can access the internet with your own computer via Wireless Local Area Network (WLAN) in lecture room 1100 or via Local Area Network (LAN) in room 1778. There are also two computer stations available in room 1778.

The WLAN access is generally possible between 08:00 am and 09:00 pm on conference days.

LAN Access

  • LAN access will be granted in room 1778. Just plug your computer to one of the provided network cables.
  • You should have access to the internet now. If this is not the case, please take a look at Configure TCP/IP.

WLAN Access

  • WLAN access will be available in and around the lecture room 1100. To connect to the WLAN proceed the following steps:
    • Right-clik the network connection icon in the nortification area, and then click View Available Wireless Networks
    • In Connect to Wireless Network, under Available Networks, double-click the wireless network con.
    • You may be warned that this connection is unsafe. Proceed by clicking on Connect Anyway.
  • You should have access to the internet now. If this is not the case, please take a look at Configure TCP/IP

Configure TCP/IP

  • Since the WLAN and LAN uses a DHCP server, it is necessary to configure your network card in a way, that it automatically obtains an IP address form this server. Otherwise you will be connected to the network, but you will not be able to get access to the internet
  • Please proceed the following steps to guarantee that your network connection is configured appropriate.
    • Open the Control Panel menu which you will find on the Start menu
    • Then click on Network Connections.
    • Right-click Local Area Connection (for LAN) or Wireless Network Connection (for WLAN) and select Properties
    • The Connection Properties  control panel will open, which is a dialog/box with three tabs
    • Choose the General tab
    • Select Internet Protocol (TCP/IP) from the list, then click on Properties
    • The Properties dialog-box will open (see screenshot)
    • IMPORTANT: In order to restore your default TCP/IP settings later, note the values listed for IP address, Subnet mask, Default gateway, Preferred DNS server and Alternate DNS server. These values (marked in red on the screenshot) will be deleted in the next step.
    • After you have noticed your default settings select Obtain an IP address automatically and Obtain DNS server automatically. Click OK to close the TCP/IP Properties dialog box
    • Click OK to close Connection Properties
  • If you still have no access to the internet after configuring the TCP/IP protocol, do not hesitate to ask for technical assistance.
  • NOTE: For security reason the ports for Windows File and Printer Sharing are locked in the WLAN.
