Researcher in Photogrammetry and Remote Sensing, interdisciplinary research project “AI4TWINNING"

The Professorship for Photogrammetry and Remote Sensing at TUM has a vacancy for a research associate / PhD candidate for the research project "Thermal 3D mapping and CNN analysis for enrichment of building models"

Your tasks:

The Professorship of Photogrammetry and Remote Sensing is conducting a research project together with five other groups at Technical University of Munich from the fields of Computer Vision (Prof. Cremers), Data Science (Prof. Zhu), Geoinformatics (Prof. Kolbe), Architectural Informatics (Prof. Petzold) and Building Information Modeling (Prof. Borrmann) in the Georg Nemetschek Institute of Artificial Intelligence for the Built World. The goal of this collaborative research is to automate the creation and updating of multiscale digital models of the built environment using AI methods (ai4twinning). In your research, you will contribute to the development of thermal 3D mapping and CNN analysis for enrichment of building models. Your work will aim at the development of mapping radiometric and geometric information indoor and outdoor at different times with a multi-sensor system consisting of a TIR camera and a laser scanner. The transition from surfaces to volumes (IRsurf2vol) should enable an integrated analysis of thermal textures. Special challenges arise not only from the calibration, but also from the diffenrent conditions in the indoor and outdoor space regarding the resolution (multi-scale), the position and orientation determination, the co-registration and the corresponding analysis of spatial thermal structures. The relation between indoor and outdoor model shall be established by an automatic detection of windows and doors. Noticeable thermal structures which are difficult to describe by parametric models should by labeled and analyzed using a convolutional neural network (CNN). In addition to your research work, participation in teaching and in the supervision of student projects is possible.

Your Profile:

  • M.Sc. in Geodesy, Geoinformatics, Computer Science, or similar
  • Experience in Photogrammetry, Image Processing, Computer Vision
  • Good programming skills (e.g. C++, Python)
  • Interest in the topics Thermal Infrared Mapping, Semantic 3D City Models, and BIM
  • Very good knowledge of the English and good knowledge of the German language (written and spoken)

The Professorship of Photogrammetry and Remote Sensing is internationally renowned for its work in the field of detection and 3d reconstruction of urban objects by different sensors and platforms and its contributions to point cloud processing and change detection. We offer a stimulating working environment at TUM, integrated in our international team of highly motivated researchers at Photogrammetry and Remote Sensing and in the Georg Nemetschek Institute. We are offering initially a 2-year contract with the possibility of extension as well as the possibility to do a doctorate. We offer a competitive salary and benefits depending on professional experience and seniority in accordance with the collective agreement for the public service of the State of Bavaria (TV-L E13).
